After taking extended time off, HBO is set to deliver the third season of their hit drama True Detective. The series serves as an anthology, with different actors taking the lead role in each season. The first season of True Detective placed Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the driver's seat, as the two stars chased a killer over a 17-year span. The second season followed Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn as they worked in cooperating criminal justice offices to find a common killer. Now, the third season will be taken over by Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali. He will play Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.

HBO released the first trailer for True Detective's third season in August, but failed to bless fans with a premiere date. The trailer highlights Ali during three different stages of his life, revealing that there will be enormous time jumps tied into a decades-long investigation. The sprawling plot is what made the series a hit in the first place. True Detective's Instagram page finally graced the world with an official release date this weekend. "Starring @mahershalaali, #TrueDetective returns January 13, 2019 on @hbo," reads the caption for a post that features the talented actor in character.
