Last night's VMAs was full of banging performances by all of the public's favorites. The obvious standout routine was offered by no other than the recipient of this year's Vanguard Award, Jennifer Lopes.
The triple threat came through serving iconic fashion looks, switching outfits multiple times during her medley. She stunned the audience from the very beginning in blue and gold Versace as the number opened to "Waiting For Tonight." Lopez rocked to old and new songs alike. Throwbacks included "My Love Don’t Cost a Thing," "All I Have." The crowd-pleasing "Jenny From The Block" was given life within a stage set that included a 6 line subway train.
A few collaborators came through for the diva's performance. Ja Rule hit the stage for "I’m Real" and "Ain’t It Funny." The medley was brought to a close with "Dinero" for which DJ Khaled and Cardi B, the night's Best New Artist, graced the stage. The trio received Best Collaboration and Best Latin for the single.
Jennifer Lopez' Vanguard Award acceptance speech was full of emotion. She inspired the crowd as she spoke of the infinite potential the universe offers us all through love. After thanking her collaborators and loved ones, Jlo also pointed to the drive that brought her this far.
"I grew up on MTV, and this is really, like, a tremendous honor for me. It has been an incredible journey of dreaming my wildest dreams and then kinda watching them come true. Music, acting, performing – this career has always been kind of an obsession for me. When people have said, ‘You’re doing too much – you can only do one thing’ […] I always had it in my mind. I was always a person who was like, ‘Why not?’ I kinda had to forge my own path and make my own rules. I was obsessed like that."
