Peterson joins injury-plagued Redskins backfield.

Following the season-ending injury of rookie running back Derrius Guice, the Washington Redskins were expected to bring in a free agent running back to help bolster their backfield. And they did just that, adding veteran RB Adrian Peterson into the mix today.

According to NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo, Peterson agreed to a one-year deal with the Skins and he'll get a chance to go up against his former teammates in Week 1 as the Redskins travel to Arizona on September 9 for a matchup against the Cardinals. AP spent the first 10 seasons of his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings but signed with the New Orleans Saints last off-season, although he only appeared in four games before being dealt to the Arizona Cardinals. In six games with the Cards, Peterson had two games in which he rushed for 293 yards but combined for just 155 in the other four games.

Peterson ranks 12th on the NFL's all-time rushing list with 12,276 yards and is just 37 yards shy of passing Cleveland Browns Hall of Famer Jim Brown.

The Redskins had also brought in Jamaal Charles and Orleans Darkwa in the wake of Guice's ACL injury and Samaje Perine's ankle injury. According to ESPN, head coach Jay Gruden has said that the starting RB job belongs to Rob Kelley.
