Before the University of Texas Longhorns and the University of Georgia Bulldogs faced off in the Sugar Bowl on Tuesday, there was an incident that occurred between their mascots. Bevo XV, a steer which is the Longhorns mascot, attacked Uga X, the bulldog that represents Georgia. The altercation was captured on video and posted to Twitter where you can see the steer break through its barricade and charge the dog. Both animals were okay.
Now the animal rights group PETA is getting involved and even sent both teams a letter asking them to get rid of their mascots. On their blog they wrote:
"[The live animal mascots are] frequently carted around to sporting events and public appearances, which are confusing and frightening for them. Human mascots can engage with sports fans, pose for pictures, lead cheers, and pump up their teams and fans much better than a terrified animal can. They’re also much less expensive for schools, and some universities offer scholarships for student mascots."
After all was said and done, the Longhorns defeated the Bulldogs 28-21 in a game that was considered to be an upset. To read more of PETA's statement, check out the tweet below.
