The Memphis Grizzlies will debut their new Nike "City Edition" uniform this Saturday, November 10 when they host the Philadelphia 76ers in the first of six "Wrestling Nights" at the FedExForum.
The grey "Main Event" uniform serves as a nod to the city's ties to professional wrestling which dates back to a time well before the Grizzlies moved from Vancouver to Memphis. The grey design is inspired by steel chairs and cages, while the gold accents represent championship belts. Another subtle detail are the Three “Beale Street Blue” stripes (one on the collar and two on the waist) that are inspired by the three ropes that encircle a wrestling ring.
The press release states:
“The City Edition uniforms provide an opportunity for us on a one year limited edition basis to tap into an aspect of the City of Memphis and its culture and identity and shine a spotlight on it,” said Jason Wexler, Grizzlies President of Business Operations. “Before the Grizzlies came to Memphis, the most popular professional sport in town was wrestling, and this year’s City Edition uniforms and series of ‘Wrestling Nights’ with promotional giveaways at FedExForum tap into the city’s deep affection for the narrative of all the heels, faces and kings who have entertained Memphians for generations.”
The Grizzlies will host a total of six Wrestling Nights this season with multiple fan giveaways, including a March 23 matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, in which the first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a Grizzlies World Championship Belt.
