"Avengers: Infinity War" passes Star Wars for All-Time domestic weekend record.

The anticipated numbers weren't far off the mark. The Marvel mainstay looks set to a North American box office record set by Star Wars: Force Awakens. The numbers are being compiled from box office tallies from 4,474 locations across theatres in both Canada and the United States. It now joins the elite company of 5 other films to have amassed over $200 million in revenue in their opening drive. The other films bearing the distinction are The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jurassic World, Black Panther, and the first of three Avengers.

The crazy thing about these startling numbers is that they coincide with a relative drop in movie theatre attendance across North America. The industry has been kept afloat by making price adjustments at the concession and by adding novelty attractions such as 3D viewing and Multimedia experiences. The success of Avengers: Infinity War never the less demonstrates the eternal appeal of movie-going experiences. It also could very signal the belly of the beast. The oversaturation of genre film will undoubtedly have an effect on quality and demand. "Quality has quality all its own," as some dude once said. Movie-goers know what they like, and tend to fall head-over-heels when the right spots are touched. Avengers: Infinity War was referred to as the second best "movie that Marvel has ever put together," by our very own review staff.
