After dozens of accusations and years of waiting, the trial of comedian Bill Cosby over the drugging and sexual assault of Andrea Constand ended with a guilty verdict on three felony counts of aggravated indecent assault. Each charge carries a penalty of ten years in prison, with Cosby facing a possible 30 years behind bars.
This morning, Ebonee Benson and Andrew Wyatt, Cosby's publicist and spokesperson, respectively, appeared on Good Morning America in order to defend Cosby's honor and maintain his innocence. Once they were on TV they, according to Complex, went the extra mile in order to cast doubt on the validity of the trial's verdict.
When asked by GMA host, George Stephanopoulos, whether it was possible that all 60 women who accused Cosby of assaulting them could be lying, Benson responded with a comparison that could be considered a stretch, to say the least.
Benson says, "Since when are all people honest? Since when are all women honest? We can take a look at Emmett Till for example."
For those of you who are unaware, Emmett Till was a 14-year-old black boy who lived in a small Mississippi town back in 1955. When a white woman accused him of leering and whistling at her, Emmett was lynched by the townspeople. He later became a symbolic figure for the Civil Rights Movement, and the woman in question eventually admitted that she lied the entire time.
Comparing Cosby, a black comedian who enjoyed huge Hollywood success before being being found guilty of sexual assault, to an innocent teenager who was murdered extrajudicially is controversial, to say the least. You can see Benson's entire statement below:
