Does anyone remember the PlayStation 2 commercial that really promoted a speculated PlayStation 9? In the old commercial, a gamer allows a spherical transparent device label PS9 to meld with his body which creates the ultimate virtual gaming experience. It looks like Sony is one step closer to making the fantasy a reality, as they begin to phase out the PlayStation 4 console.
Wall Street Journal reporter Takashi Mochizuki sat in on a Sony strategy meeting, and delivered some interesting news for PlayStation fans. According to his tweets, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO John Kodera stated, "PS4 is entering final phase of its life cycle." He continued on to write that the phase out would have a "negative impact to the unit, but recurring revenue via membership services etc should cushion some of that."
In an article written by Mochizuki for the Journal, he reveals that Kodera also stated, “We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future." Three years will fly in no time, and Sony will undoubtedly begin releasing specs and other details about their next system within a year and a half. Mochizuki also reported, "PSVR growing, but industry's growth is below market expectations. PS Vue is facing harder-than-expected competitions." It looks like Sony will have to restrategize the structure of their mobile and virtual platforms.
