During 2017, Brockhampton released three projects and built an incredibly loyal fanbase that would ultimately land them a $15M deal with RCA. Unfortunately, around the same time is when allegations of sexual misconduct against Ameer Vann came up. The allegations resulted in Vann's departure from the group. Aside from the initial statement that revealed that Vann was kicked out of the group, they haven't really spoke out about it. However, in a recent article, Kevin Abstract finally broke his silence.
In a recent interview with Billboard, Kevin Abstract addressed the departure Ameer Vann.
"I became aware of the allegations at the same time as the public did," Abstract said. "It was in the morning, and I was at the house. I woke up and that was one of the first things I saw. It’s kind of a blur. I was probably confused? Yeah. I was pretty confused."
Abstract explained that he believed Vann's initial denial of the allegations.
"We’re a family, and family’s built on trust, right? And because of that we stood by Ameer as he responded,” he said. However, Abstract admits that Vann broke that trust.
After Kevin was asked what he was lied to about, he responded, "There was a few...it was just a few different things. It just made me...really skeptical...I guess I’m not comfortable going into details of what he was lying about. I do know that I was lied to."
Kevin also explained why it took the group a while to address the allegations. He said they all got off social media at the time to focus on finishing the album but that's when the allegations against Vann began to surface.
"We got off social media so we could finish working on the album, and during that same month that's when the allegations came up. We were really slow to respond to them. I just felt terrible that the fans couldn't reach us for answers." He said.
