Meek Mill's Championships dropped on Friday to instant acclaim from fans, who seemingly rallied around the rapper as one would a "people's champ." Boasting guest appearances from Rick Ross, Jay-Z, Cardi B, Drake, Future, Young Thug, and more, Meek Mill's latest album seemed destined for a solid first week, especially given his recent unjust incarceration. Now, it would appear his efforts have paid off, as Championships is poised for an impressive debut on the charts.
HDD is already projecting the album to move between 150-175k units, with 24-27k coming from traditional sales. It should be noted that this marked a notable step-up from his previous album Wins & Losses, which moved 102k units during its first week. Clearly, the public have taken interest in Meek, and it's nice to see his impressive effort be rewarded in kind.
Aside from Meek, Quality Control's own Lil Baby put in work, with his Street Gossip project bringing in between 80-90k; it's a good look for the rapper, who has already dropped two projects prior. Earl Sweatshirt's return established his position as "cult icon," with his lo-fi odyssey Some Rap Songs pushing between 28-33k. Overall, a big week for hip-hop, with many dope projects being appreciated accordingly.
