"Incredibles 2" is looking to break the box office record for an animated movie in its opening weekend. The film, which comes from Disney-Pixar, is expected to reach $173 million this weekend, according to early estimates published by Variety. Disney has projected that the movie will take in a slightly lower amount -- between $150 million and $165 million. Even if it comes in on the more modest end of the spectrum, I2 should still surpass Finding Dory's record of $135 million. If it does reach $173 million, the movie will hold the 11th-biggest domestic launch, trailing Iron Man 3 at 174.1 million.
The sequel to the beloved 2004 animation The Incredibles, The Incredibles 2 is receiving similarly glowing reviews, currently holding a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was written and directed by Brad Bird, who was behind the original as well as Disney-Pixar's Ratatouille. The Incredibles earned $70.5 million in its opening in 2004, which at the time was the second-largest opening for an animated feature. It won the Oscar for best animated feature in 2005.
After Solo: A Star Wars Story underperformed in its opening, Incredibles 2 appears to be a welcome hit for Disney.
Meanwhile, Director X's Superfly remake is looking to increase its $2.1 million in earning since Wednesday with an additional $8 million this weekend.
