Former United States president George Herbert Walker Bush has passed away at the age of 94. Bush was the forty-first president of the United States, and his son followed in his footsteps to become a president as well. Bush Sr. was elected to office in 1988, winning the Electoral College, and also receiving roughly 53% of the popular vote. Bill Clinton would defeat Bush after his first term in 1992.
Bush Sr. served two terms as Ronald Reagan's vice president before upgrading to the most powerful position in the government. His wife, Barbara Bush, passed away on April 17 at the age of 92. They were together for 73 years. Bush Sr. was the first vice president to be elected to the presidency since 1836, and also the second person in US history whose son was able to become president after his father. The other family to accomplish the feat was John Adams, the 2nd president, and his son John Quincy Adams, the 6th president.
"Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died," wrote George Bush Jr. in a statement. "George H. W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41’s life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens."
