The mayor of a town in Louisiana has reportedly issued a memorandum demanding that the city recreation department and any booster clubs operating at its facilities no longer purchase or accept delivery of Nike athletic products or any apparel that features the company's swoosh logo.
According to a city memo, Mayor Ben Zahn allegedly approved the prohibition of Nike products for purchase or delivery at any recreation facility in Kenner, Louisiana. The announcement comes about a week after Nike used free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick in a series of ads as part of their "Just Do It" campaign.
"Under no circumstances will any Nike product or any product with the Nike logo be purchased for use or delivery at any city of Kenner recreation facility," according to the memo, which is on official mayor's office letterhead and signed by Zahn.
According to NOLA.com, Kenner booster club president Owen Rey told WWL the policy "shouldn't be that way." "If we have something that we feel that we want that's going to benefit our kids," Rey said, "it shouldn't matter what logo, what brand -- as long as it helps the kids and what we're trying to accomplish at the park."
Additionally, Kenner Councilman Gregory Carroll posted the following message on Facebook saying he is "100% AGAINST" the decision. "I was not made aware of this decision beforehand and it is in direct contradiction of what I stand for and what the City of Kenner should stand for. I am 100% AGAINST this decision. I will meet with the Mayor and other Council members in an effort to rescind this directive."
