A Polish musician named Bogumił "Boogie” Romanowski" is the latest media personality to use blackface in a televised performance. The incident in question occurred on Twoja Twarz Brzmi Znajomo, a variety program popular in the all-important 18 to 49-year-old TV demographic.
Before you even have the chance to mull over the offensiveness of his gesture, you're bombarded with how terrible his interpretation of "hotline Bling" is with respect to the original. Romanowski makes no attempt at connecting with the material, let alone imbuing his version with humor or precision. Something tells me he just doesn't "get it;" oh and he might be mildly bigoted too.
Romanowski is a member of a band called Lobuzy, as well as a regular cast member of Twoja Twarz Brzmi Znajomo tenth season. The general premise of the show is for Polish celebrities to impersonate other more globally-recognized singers for a cash prize that gets forwarded to a charity of their choice.
The crowd was mildly enthused by Romanowski's impression, despite the fact "Hotline Blind" has worn itself out as an enjoyable song (my opinion). Even the judges liked his performance, enough to award him the 10,000 złoty prize money. Twoja Twarz Brzmi Znajomo even posted the following image of him in blackface, holding the 10,000 złoty check.
