Moments after France's 4-2 victory against Croatia in the 2018 World Cup Final, swarms of soccer fans took to the streets of France to celebrate the country's second World Cup title. Naturally, the celebrations got a bit out of hand.
According to reports, a total of 292 people were placed in police custody across France on Sunday, including in Paris where 102 people were arrested, and 92 taken to jail. Among the disturbances was a large crowd that gathered outside of the Nike store on the Champs Elysee, where fans were eager to get their hands on the new France shirt, complete with two stars to signify two World Cup championships.
Following some violent altercations outside of the store, riot police were called in to intervene. Shortly thereafter, it was announced that the championship gear would not be put on general sale until Tuesday.
According to the Irish Mirror, French police fired tear gas and dispersed crowds from the Champs Elysees, where celebrations turned into widespread rioting, looting and ugly clashes with cops as two people lost their lives. In the Alpine city of Annecy, some 350 miles east, a 50-year-old France fan broke his neck after jumping into a canal at the end of the final. Additionally, in nearby Saint-Felix, a man in his 30s was killed when his car crashed into a tree as he celebrated his team's win.
