Last week, it was announced that Ruby Rose would be taking on the mantle of Batwoman in the Arrowverse annual crossover event. Batwoman is an openly gay superhero, the first one in the DC universe. She was originally created as a love interest for Batman in the 50's, after a book called Seduction of the Innocents by Dr. Fredrick Wertham sent the nation into mass hysteria. Wertham suggested that Batman and Robin were gay (because they run around in tights together), and that comics were placing homosexual thoughts in people's minds. Come to think of it, Wertham himself may have been a closeted gay man if he reached so far as to think Batman and Robin may have a relationship. Decades later, Batwoman was reinvented to be a gay character, which essentially corrects the homophobia that lent to her original creation.
Ruby Rose was excited to play Batwoman, but she recently quit Twitter after DC Comic fans tried to insinuate that she wasn't a lesbian. Rose let off a series of tweets before deleting her account. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Rose responded to the critics who once though she was "too gay," and now all of a sudden, she isn't gay enough. "Where on earth did 'Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can't be Batwoman' come from... has to be the funniest, most ridiculous thing I've ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with 'she's too gay'... How do y'all flip it like that. I didn't change," she tweeted before shutting down her account.
"When women and when minorities join forces we are unstoppable... When we tear each other down, it's much more hurtful than from any group. But hey, love a challenge. I just wish women and the LGBT community supported each other more," she added. Rose has also turned off all comments on her Instagram page.
