Vince Staples swings his web into unknown territory.

Vince Staples has always been somewhat of an artistic visionary. His music is often carefully curated to suit his particular tastes and preferences; cold and no-nonsense, to mirror his temperament. Yet how can one, even one as eternally smug as he, resist the simple charms of Spider-Man? Vince recently joined the ranks of Lil Wayne, Ty Dolla $ign, Post Malone, Swae Lee and more, contributing a selection to the Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse soundtrack. Given the film's family-friendly tone, the end result is a far cry from Staples' general wheelhouse.

That's not to say he doesn't turn in a strong performance. His flow remains focused, and his lyrics carry a notable weight behind them. “This morning I woke up in a fortress of distortion, I’m at war with my emotions, I’m at war with the enforcement,” raps Vince, inserting some poignant social commentary into the mix. It's simply difficult to hear him over such a glossy, radio-friendly hip-pop instrumental, given the precedent he's set. Still, the man is getting his bag, and for that, Vince must be respected.

Quotable Lyrics

This morning I woke up in a fortress of distortion,
I’m at war with my emotions, I’m at war with the enforcement
Tryna fight for what’s right and got sidetracked
Where your mind at? Never mind that
