The 2009 horror-comedy Zombieland is getting a proper sequel. The four stars of the original film, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson and Abigail Breslin, will all reprise their roles in the upcoming movie, which is slated for an October 2019 release. The cast, who are now all Oscar nominees (all but Breslin, who was nominated for Little Miss Sunshine in 2007, earning their nominations in films after Zombieland), will begin filming in January 2019.
Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, the original screenwriters who have since found success in the Deadpool series, will also return for Zombieland 2. With that being said, Zombieland, was also a hit itself, scoring $100 million at the box office on a $24 million budget, before seeing further cult success when released for home media consumption.
Ruben Fleischer, who went on to direct 30 Minutes Or Less, Gangster Squad, and the upcoming Venom film, will return as director, making for a sequel that should recapture the feel of the first installment.
"This is one of those projects that fans have wanted to see happen for a long time — and no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse and Abigail,” Columbia president Sanford Panitch told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. “These are some of the most in-demand actors, and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing.”
