Brutal news for the Redskins.

Washington Redskins' rookie running back Derrius Guice's season before it ever started. According to several reports, Guice suffered a torn ACL during last night's preseason opener against the New England Patriots, and will miss his entire rookie year as a result.

Guice injured the knee on an impressive 34-yard run that was ultimately called back because of a holding penalty. He finished with six carries for 19 yards in his debut. Initially, the Redskins were optimistic that Guice had only sprained his MCL, and the former LSU star was in good spirits after the game, telling reporters, "all is well."

"At the back end of the play, when I was stiff-arming [a defender], my feet just kind of planted weirdly on the turf and my knee just hyperextended a little bit," he said, per ESPN.com's Mike Reiss. "It's fine."

The Redskins selected the 21-year old running back with the 59th overall pick in the 2018 Draft and he was due to play a major role in Washington's backfield this season.

Now, the Skins will move forward with Samaje Perine and Rob Kelley, as well as pass-catching threat Chris Thompson, who is still recovering from a fractured fibula he suffered on November 19. According to NFL.com, Kapri Bibbs, Byron Marshall and undrafted rookie Martez Carter are also listed on the backfield depth chart.

Washington will open up the season on the road in Arizona on September 9.
