Listen to Rexx Life Raj's "The Light."

Before music, Rexx Life Raj was a football player landing a full scholarship to Boise State and riding it out until his graduation in 2012. His shift in gears seems to be paying off though and Raj continues his quest invade hears far and wide, he dropped off his California Poppy effort this weekend. A follow up to last year’s Father Figure 2 effort, California Poppy shares a considerably more vulnerable Raj as he decidedly reflects on the journey thus far and make a great example of that on his “The Light” cut.

“That was just one of those tracks where I was talking about the shit I was going through at the time and talking about my past experiences at Boise State and playing football out there,” he tells Hypebeast of the track. “I shouted out my strength and conditioning coach on the song, which is gonna be crazy when he hears it.”

“For that one, it was a hook for a long time, and I sent it to OMB Peezy and Nef the Pharaoh, and we didn’t get a response, so I was like, “f*ck it, I’ma finish this joint out too.” I turned it into something really clean.”

Listen to “The Light” now.

Quotable Lyrics

Look, 'cause I'm in a position to change hella lives
I pray to God at night, just hoping that I do it right
I'm battling myself, pop a Xanny when it help
I want Funk to feel like Offset when he got out of jail
Ain't emerging 'til the life lit, keep my circle tight-knit
Runnin' shit but never sweat it like I'm wearing Dri-FIT
