Though XXXTentacion is gone, his musical legacy is destined to live on. For those seeking a silver lining, it would appear that the rapper's posthumous album is still on the way. Producer John Cunningham, who worked closely with X on ?, has caught up with Genius to provide an update on the state of affairs, vis-a-vis X's upcoming music.
"We basically started making this next album right after ? came out,” explains Cunningham. “The songs and the ideas and the vision of it all was done or very close to being done.” While he's much of the creative control has fallen onto his shoulder, he feels the ultimate direction of the project was already decided by its original author. "The whole idea, the concept, the songs, [all that] was done,” explains Cunningham.
We already know that X was heavily plotting three albums at the onset of 2018; one was ?, and the other two were tentatively titled Skins and Bad Vibes Forever. It's unknown whether the album in question is one of the unreleased two, though such a conclusion appears likely. It's also possible that Cunningham is specifically referring to Bad Vibes Forever; the album was previously teased by Denzel Curry, who posted this mysterious tracklist. In any case, it's good to know that X's upcoming project will be in line with what the late rapper would have wanted.
Cunningham also opens up about recent interest in XXXTentacion, particularly from high profile artists. "It’s hard to see someone that he looked up to and didn’t know whether or not they liked him back saying they liked him after he’s gone,” he admits. " I know he would have been so happy seeing a lot of this stuff while he was still around.”
We previously had the pleasure of speaking to John Cunningham about working with X; peep that here.
