Last week, both Anthony Bourdain and Kate Spade tragically took their own lives. Although mental health has been an important topic, and a less stigmatized topic, as of late, the loss of Bourdain and Spade is reaffirming the need to take care of yourself, and those around you. Jada Pinkett Smith hasn't been shy when it comes to opening up about her private life on her Facebook show Red Table Talk. On Monday, Pinkett-Smith took to Instagram to speak candidly about her own mental health.
In the post, which features pictures of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, Pinkett-Smith wrote, "One thing I’ve learned in my life over the years is that mental health is something we should practice daily, not just when issues arise." She then continued on to reveal that she has contemplated suicide herself. "We should take care of our mind and spirit in the same way we do our body. With the suicides of Kate and Anthony it brought up feelings of when I was in such despair and had considered the same demise...often."
Pinkett-Smith also reveals the things in her life that affect her mental health. "What I eat, what I watch on TV, what music I listen to, how I care for my body, my spiritual practice, what people I surround myself with, the amount of stress I allow and so on... either contribute to or deteriorate my mental health."
"May Kate and Anthony Rest In Peace," she added before spreading love to her fans. If you or a loved one is suffering from depression and need someone to speak to, remember the suicide prevention hotline is available 24/7, and the phone number is 1-800-273-8255.
