Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas has ended his holdout and will report to camp today. The Seahawks tried to find a trade partner for Thomas, who had previously stated he wouldn’t report without a new contract in place, but were unable to come to terms on a deal.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Dallas Cowboys upped their offer for Thomas from a third-round pick to a second-rounder but the Seahawks still wanted more compensation. As a result, Thomas will play out the final year of his contract with the Seahawks. According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the Seahawks have agreed to wipe away almost all of his fines for missing training camp.
Thomas took to instagram today to announce he will report to Seahawks camp today, but it's clear he doesn't expect to be back in Seattle after this season.
“I worked my whole life for this,” he wrote on instagram. “I’ve never let me teammates, city or fans down as long as I’ve lived and don’t plan on starting this weekend. With that being said, the disrespect has been well noted and will not be forgotten. Father Time may have an undefeated record but best believe I plan on taking him into triple overtime when it comes to my career.”
Thomas published an article on The Player's Tribune last month titled, "Here's What's Actually Going On," in which he issued the team an ultimatum: pay me, or trade me. With no trade in place, the 29-year old safety will enter the final season of a four-year, $40 million extension he signed with the Seahawks in 2014. According to Pro Football Talk, Thomas is scheduled to make a base salary of $8.5 million this year.
The Seahawks will kick off the regular season this Sunday, September 9, with a road game against the Denver Broncos.
