There are different movies for different moments. Sometimes, a drama with a drawn-out plot is a good time killer. Or, maybe a horror flick is a good choice when you invite a date over and need an excuse to get close. Netflix has something for everybody, but one genre is severely underappreciated. The stoner comedy. Movies like Half Baked or How High are perfect because of how imperfect they are. Just smoke up and sit back, enjoy the comedy on the screen while lost in a haze. The best thing about the stoner comedy is the low level of commitment and the high levels of hilarity. The plot doesn’t need to make sense, the movie doesn’t need an amazing rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and winning an Oscar is unlikely. Still, it feels good to sit back and just laugh at slapstick comedy
Stoner comedies come in several forms. There is the traditional movie about a crew getting high and going on an adventure. Then there are action comedies that are so obviously ridiculous that it would almost be blasphemous not to smoke up before watching them. Every now and then there’s the rom-com that graduates past being trite and is accepted in the stoner comedy genre. So whether you're looking for action with your comedy, or romance, Netflix has a stoner comedy for you. From Tropic Thunder to Mac & Devin Go to High School, these are the best comedies to get stoned to on Netflix.
Waterboy
Bobby Boucher should be the poster child for anger management. Adam Sandler plays a sheltered kid who learns to harness his anger to become a star football player. Things get complicated when he falls in love, and his mother tries to stop him from pursuing his dreams. Waterboy is a classic, and one of Sandler’s most memorable roles.
Tropic Thunder
Tropic Thunder may be the best action comedy that’s come out in the last decade. A crew of actors who believe they are filming a movie get lost in the jungles of Vietnam. Robert Downey Jr. does blackface and hilariously gets away with it. Ben Stiller learned that you never go full retard. Jack Black almost gets everybody killed over his drug addiction, and the cameos in Tropic Thunder are epic.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Doesn’t everyone have at least one ex-lover that they wish they could forget? Jason Segel is heartbroken once his famous girlfriend dumps him, and so he takes a trip to Hawaii to get over her. Unfortunately, his ex is also vacationing on the island with her new rock star boyfriend, making things hilariously difficult.
Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
After completing their mission to White Castle, Harold and Kumar decide to take things to the ultimate pot smoker’s heaven… Amsterdam. While traveling to the Netherlands, the two are mistaken for terrorist while smoking a bong on the plane. Thrown in Guantanamo Bay, Harold and Kumar must escape and clear their names.
Scary Movie
Although most people became worn out by the endless sequels and spinoffs that came from Scary Movie, the original is a classic. Most of the jokes in this parody film are based on horror movies and events that occurred in the 90’s, making this nostalgic comedy perfect for 90’s babies. A crew of school kids are trapped in a mash-up between Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer that ends with a hilarious twist.
Sausage Party
This crude adult cartoon show is both raunchy and ridiculous. Everyday grocery store items feel betrayed when they learn that their religious teachings are all lies. Instead of being met with a heavenly experience when they leave the grocery store, the items are shocked to learn they are brutally killed and eaten by humans once they are brought home.
Mac & Devin Go to High School
Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg make a great team of stoners in this feel-good comedy. Snoop and Wiz attend N. Hale high school, both a play on the word “inhale” and a nod to the late Nate Dogg’s real name, Nathaniel Hale. Snoop convinces Wiz to try weed, and their stoner adventure begins.
Hot Fuzz
Hot Fuzz is the most successful film in Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s action comedy trilogy. This parody film follows the overkilled buddy cop action movie model and Pegg and Frost team up to save a small town from a murderer. Things aren't what they seem in the small town though, and Pegg and Frost must face shock and betrayal before this hilarious parody comes to an end.
The Ridiculous 6
This movie is as ridiculous as the name implies. Adam Sandler stars in this comedy western about a son trying to rescue his father. In the process of saving his father, he learns that he has a gang of step-brothers, and they all team up for a comedic rescue mission. Somehow, Terry Crews is his black brother.
The 40-Year-Old Virgin
This classic has some of the best quotables of any comedy. Steve Carrell stars as a middle-aged man who has never lost his virginity. Once his friends find out, it becomes a team effort to get their buddy laid. As expected, Carrell falls in love and things get hilariously complicated as he learns about sex.
