Ocean’s 8 has broken a franchise record with its historic debut. The latest installment, which flips roles into an all-female principal cast has claimed $41.5 million at the domestic box office in its debut weekend, doing just what most said it would do. While it fell just under the projected $44 million it was slated to rake up, it was still enough for the film to land a No. 1 spot over all other films in theaters.
Friday alone, the film had already beat out previous installments that were host to a team of actors that included George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Matt Damon when it brought in $15.9 million on its opening day, besting the previous $14.7 million held by Ocean’s Twelve. Ocean’s Eleven and Ocean’s Thirteen boasted figures of $13.3 million and $14.7 million, respectively.
In 2007, Ocean’s Thirteen debuted with $36.1 million at the box office, in 2004 its predecessor Ocean’s Twelve opened up with $39.2 million and in 2001 the first in the series Ocean’s Eleven laid claim to $38.1 million in its opening weekend.
Globally, Ocean’s 8 has reeled in a total of $53.7 million after bringing in a performance of $12.2 million in overseas markets, already closing in on its $70 million budget.
Elsewhere in the box office Star Wars’ Solo is still hanging on at No. 2, pulling $15.2 million this weekend brings its 17-day total to $176.1 million while Deadpool 2 arrived at No. 3, attracting $13.7 million in its fourth weekend.
