Mahalia falls into the school of thought that favors the idiom, "write what you know." The artist is admired for the vulnerable quality of her lyrics, an enticing characteristic found on her Seasons EP.
"My whole life, I've always written when I felt something deeply about something or somebody. And so I've always referred to it as 'seasons' of my life. Like, 'That was that season, and now this is this season. That guy was in that season.' And so with this EP, I wanted to do a five-track—or five-stage—idea of a relationship."
"Surprise Me" tells the story of young lovers struggling with the implications of a long-distance relationship. This dynamic is depicted in the accompanying visuals, showing a couple growing distant while still being in close physical proximity.
Seasons is a lead up to a full-length release. The 5-track offering eases the wait for her next studio album. Stream the whole project here.
