A display copy of Grand Theft Auto V (C) sits on a shelf at the 8 Bit & Up video games shop in Manhattan's East Village on September 18, 2013 in New York City. The video game raked in more than $800 million in sales in its first 24 hours on the shelves.
That "GTA VI" message was false.

Grand Theft Auto V is the most lucrative video game of all time. Since it was released in 2013, GTA V has earned over $6 billion dollars, and it continues to be one of the top ten selling games in the country. Rockstar Games, the studio behind the GTA series, has made it clear that it will be awhile before gamers get their hands on a new title in the series. At the moment, the game developer is busy promoting Red Dead Redemption 2. Their latest sequel is similar to GTA, but it takes place in the wild west.

Last week, gamers who were playing Grand Theft Auto Online were treated with a message from Rockstar Games. "GTA VI Coming 2019," read the announcement, which sent the gaming world into a frenzy. Once the news began to go viral, the real Rockstar Games stepped forward to break gamers' hearts. The developer claimed that the message was a hoax made from illegal mods.

It doesn't look like gamers will be getting a new Grand Theft Auto for this generation of gaming consoles. Rockstar Games will need to create their biggest game yet to follow up the success of GTA V, which means the technology of future consoles may hold the key to the next entry in the series.
