Just yesterday, Universal Studios dropped the first teaser trailer for the upcoming film The First Purge, a prequel to the massively successful horror franchise. Ironically, its release coincided with Donald Trump's State of the Union speech, as the short trailer directly mocks the "make America great again" mantra that the president adopted and emblazoned on paraphernalia during his campaign.
The First Purge, which is directed by Gerard McMurray, details how America came to embrace the idea of the bloodthirsty annual purge that legalizes any act of violence or unlawfulness for one night.
Any viewer who witnessed the last instalment in the franchise, Election Year, will know that a prequel is the only logical next step in keeping the series afloat and commercially viable.
The teaser trailer is executed in a form similar to Trump's presidential television ads, as a voiceover details how the tradition of purging is the only way to keep America great, utilizing a grab bag of inspirational turn of phrases to inspire American citizens to partake in the event.
The film will star Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei, alongside Lex Scott Davis, Y'Lan Noel, Luna Lauren Velez and Joivan Wade. It will be released on July 4th, using the birth of America to retell the creation of the purge; peep the trailer below:
