ICE, also known as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, organized a mass raid of the Bay Area. Officers were able to effectively arrest 150 immigrants who remained undocumented according to CBS San Francisco.
The department seeks to engage in other incursions similar to this one, and capture many more immigrants living within and around San Francisco. ICE Deputy Director Thomas Homan believes that these individuals are "public safety threats," adding how there are still another 864 undocumented immigrants within the Northern California region who still need to be seized by federal law enforcement. Homan was also particularly critical of Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf, who alerted colleagues of the forthcoming raid.
Americans are outraged by these actions, as hundreds of high school students from Texas recently took to the streets to protest the detention of a former classmate due to similar efforts brought forth by ICE.
Immigrants are routinely shafted by the American government, as it has recently been revealed that the Supreme Court declined to hear an important case for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), which seeks to protect thousands of young immigrants from deportation. The Supreme Court also ruled in favour of detaining immigrants indefinitely without the chance of bond hearings.
