In the development everyone saw coming, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has accomplished the inevitable as it reached the billion-dollar benchmark this week after pocketing $304.8 million at the domestic box office and $700.7 million in international markets. It now becomes the 35th film to join the billion-dollar club and marks Universal’s seventh billion-dollar grossing film.
In China, the film raked in $245.2 million and now ranks as fifth highest-grossing Western film of all time in the country.
Universal has plenty to celebrate as it lays claim to the seventh and eighth highest -grossing franchises of all time with Jurassic and Fast & Furious. It’s also the only studio, outside of Disney, to hold at least two titles in at least three different franchises to hit $1 billion. Despicable Me joins in that feat.
With big blockbusters dominating the first half of 2018, most analysts predict that the Jurassic World sequel will be the last to make such a splash for the remainder of the year with Black Panther, Infinity War, and Incredibles 2 giving audiences an eyeful for the past months.
Moviegoers, however, have much to look forward to if they’re feenin’ for a blockbuster bandwagon as 2019 will be host to the arrival of Avengers 4, Wonder Woman 1984, Toy Story 4, and the remake of The Lion King among other titles.
