LAPD is unclear as to why the police standoff with Tyler Honeycutt escalated quickly.

Former Sacramento Kings forward and UCLA standout has been found dead after barricading himself in his home during a standoff with police. According to a police report, officers responded to calls there was a man toting a weapon around Honeycutt's Los Angeles home. Upon arrival, Honeycutt, the shadowy figure witness saw holding a gun, started firing his weapon at the cops, who then returned the favor.

Honeycutt then barricaded himself in his home while officers waited diligently for any sign of self-defeat or retaliation. After a few hours, cops decided to call upon a SWAT unit. Once inside they found Honeycutt completely unresponsive with what appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Cops later found out it was Tyler's own mother who had phoned authorities saying her son was "acting erratically." Honeycutt was 27 at the time of his death; no officers were reported injured during the exchange of gunfire.

After playing out his sophomore year at UCLA as a First-team All-Pac-10, Honeycutt declared for the 2011 NBA Draft, where he was picked 35th overall by the Kings. After only suiting up 24 games in two combined years, Tyler continued his basketball career overseas, winning the elusive EuroBasket championship with Russian club BC Khimki.
