Hiro Murai, executive producer and director of FX’s hit series Atlanta has signed a new first-look deal with the network to help in the development of new projects for FX and its other outlets and it's more than understandable as to why FX would want to lock down such prime talent.
"Hiro has excelled as a director and a creative force in commercials, music videos and episodic television, and we welcome the chance to see him develop his own series through FX Productions,” says Nick Grad, co-president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions.
This season of Atlanta has had a total of seven episodes directed by Murai, including that nightmare-inducing, but perfectly executed Teddy Perkins episode and the season’s “Crabs In A Barrel” finale. He’s been a long-time collaborator of Donald Glover’s and last week he received his long-awaited praise for his creative chops in the music video space when he directed the Childish Gambino gumbo of symbolism that is the “This Is America” clip.
“When we’re working on something, I’m just trying to make it interesting for us and hope that whatever’s interesting for us will connect with people watching it,” Murai told Variety of his creative process with Glover, whether working on television or on music videos.
“[Hiro] helped make Atlanta the most acclaimed comedy series on television, greatly contributing to its signature style and tone and becoming an integral part of the creative team led by Donald Glover,” Grad added. “With his boundless artistry, Hiro is poised to take the next step as a television creator.”
