The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been an action-packed staple in our movie-going experiences since 2008. For the past 10 years, Marvel Studios has been stitching together an on-going narrative. Whereas the mad titan, Thanos was once a spoiler near the beginning of the series, he's now about to face off with the Avengers in the upcoming film, Avengers: Infinity War. The MCU has had many directors on board to navigate between differing stories, but the multiple throughlines will converge in the two-part superhero spectacular.
Joe Russo, a co-director of the upcoming Avengers films alongside his brother, had the opportunity to share his thoughts on the 10-year history of films during a Thor: Ragnarok special feature. “Every story that Marvel has told since Iron Man 1 finds a narrative thread in these next two Avengers movies. It is a culmination of all that storytelling” he states.
The Marvel movies are known for their visual Easter eggs and foreshadowing, but this is the largest occurrence of an intertwining, ongoing narrative in film. With 18 movies to draw from, we can expect to see the cumulative history of our favorite characters, and have questions answers by the end of the first installment. The highly-anticipated film drops on May 4th.
