Once you reach a certain age you can do exactly what you want with little regard for trends and sometimes it works out. This is exactly what Cypress Hill is doing with their new song "Crazy" from the forthcoming Elephants on Acid, which will be available in full on September 28th.
Their new song ends up hitting a lot of very current notes in the hip-hop world (the jury is out on whether or not this is intentional). They've got a dose of the drugged-out and absurd Soundcloud rap scene, with mini elephants floating by their heads in what could be a Trippie Redd video, and a sprinkling of the psychedelic, jazzy work of people like Thundercat or (sometimes) Kendrick Lamar. That said, DJ Muggs, B-Real and Sen Dog are still located squarely in the realm of the school and are certainly not pandering to a younger generation.
Give the new song a listen below.
Quotable Lyrics
Got a strap on the lap, ratta-tat-tat
Po-Po's comin', I'm on the run with sun on my back and my elephant lungs
If I see another one, grab a elephant gun
If you can't see it's irrelevant, son
He's so insane that's what they say, he hit that bong too hard one day
