Jay Z's documentary earns critical recognition.

Back in 2016, it was announced that Jay Z would be executive producing a 6-part documentary series for Spike TV, titled, "Time: The Kalief Browder Story." The documentary would cover the case of Kalief Browder, a high school student from the Bronx who was imprisoned in Rikers Island prison for three years, two of which in solitary confinement, without ever being convicted of a crime. Browder committed suicide two years later.

It was reported today that "Time: The Kalief Browder Story" was selected alongside eight other documentaries to receive Peabody Awards, which honor engaging, affecting, and informative television programming. Other winners also included "Maya Angelou: Still I Rise," "Newtown," and "Last Men in Aleppo."

When "Time" was released, it was met with universal critical acclaim, and currently holds a 100 per cent "Fresh" rating on the review aggregator website, Rotten Tomatoes. In Vanity Fair's review of the series, Maureen Ryan wrote that, "Though it may veer into the melodramatic at times, “Time” has an important story to tell, and is imbued with a passionate desire to present every important aspect of the injustices done to Browder — and thousands of other men and women like him."

During promotion for the film, Jay spoke about Browder and the effect his story had on him. He said, "I look at Kalief Browder as a modern-day prophet. Our prophets come in many different shapes, forms, or mediums. This young man just by the fact that he brought all of us here today lets you know how powerful of a soul he was.

"Time: The Kalief Browder Story" can be streamed on Netflix.
