Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield has seen his fair share of talented football players, having spent three years at the University of Oklahoma, but none compare to his new teammate, Josh Gordon.
Gordon, 27, was reinstated last year after missing the 2015 and 2016 seasons and he seems primed to return to form as one of the league's top receivers. Mayfield, for one, is certainly impressed by what he has seen thus far from the talented wide receiver.
"I’ve never seen anybody like him," Mayfield said Tuesday of Gordon, according to Andrew Gribble of the Browns' website.
In five games last season with the Browns, Gordon recorded 18 receptions for 335 yards and a touchdown. In 2013, when Jason Campbell, Brian Hoyer and Brandon Weeden were quarterbacking the Browns, Gordon racked up a league-best 1,646 receiving yards and nine touchdowns on 87 catches in 14 games. He also become the first receiver in league history to record consecutive 200-yard receiving games during that season.
Last season with the Sooners, Mayfield threw for 4,627 yards and 43 touchdowns to just six interceptions en route to a Heisman trophy award. As a result, he was selected #1 overall by the Cleveland Browns, who have added a ton of talent this off-season. In addition to having Gordon for a full season in 2018, the Browns also acquired former Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry, as well as ex-49ers running back Carlos Hyde.
Mayfield will likely start the season on the bench in favor of veteran QB Tyrod Taylor but that won't make a difference to Gordon, who has shown he can make big plays no matter who is tossing him the ball.
