Quincy Jones is one of the most legendary musical figures of all time, contributing to so many projects over the course of his career. His work with Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra made him into the icon he is today and thankfully, he's still alive to tell his stories of how he got to where he is today. A documentary based on his life and career has been produced and will be distributed by Netflix next month with the crew deciding to keep things in the family, choosing Rashida Jones as the co-director.
Working directly with Alan Hicks, Quincy's daughter has been announced as the director to Quincy, an upcoming documentary that will use archival footage and modern-day material to highlight the man's legendary career as a trumpeter, producer, conductor, composer, and arranger. According to Variety, the doc will look into the mentorships he developed with some of the greats like Leslie Gore, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jackson, and Will Smith. The work will also document Quincy's ventures in film and television, telling the stories of how he produced The Color Purple and composed the TV show Roots.
Of course, Rashida is excited about the opportunity to work on this project as she stated, "It’s rare that somebody who has lived as much life as my dad is still interested in growing and knowing the next generation. He is such a man of action and accomplishments, but we were so lucky to spend real time with him, to let him reflect on life and the larger picture. I feel honored to be able to share that with audiences all over the world."
Quincy will debut on Netflix on September 21. Will you be tuning in?
