Sunday evening, the performances at what the Recording Academy says was the most diverse Grammy Awards ever certainly worked to prove that point as artists of color, predominantly in the Hip-Hop and R&B scope, graced the stage to deliver on some of the evening's most exciting performances.
While Kendrick Lamar kicked things off with a medley of his own to open up the ecremonies, he'd be followed up with a solo perfromance from Childish Gambino as he went into his "Terrified." K.Dot and Childish Gambino would be in the company of other performers that included Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, whose "Despacito" smash has gone either Platinum or Diamond in at least 16 different countries in additon to a performance of DJ Khaled's "Wild Thoughts" hit with Rihanna and Bryson Tiller getting into character for the latin-inspired hit.
"Wild Thoughts" served as a follow-up to Cardi B and Bruno Mars' collaborative perfomance of the latter's "Finesse" off of his 24K Magic album, which earned him the award for Best R&B Album of The Year by the time he hit the stage.
We'd also witness Top Dawg Entertainment's resident siren make her debut on the Grammy stage as SZA delivered on a powerful performance. Despite being nominated for five different awards, SZA walked away with no wins to the dismay of many. Nonetheless, her always posied and moving stage presence managed to overshadow her snub Sunday evening.
Notably, SZA was bested in the category for Best New Artist by Alessia Cara, who would later take to the stage alongside rapper Logic and singer Khalid, who also earned a nomination for Best New Artst, as the trio performed their "1-800-273-8255" track in a showing topped off by a monologue from Logic as he poetically addressed social injustic to a sea of applause.
