Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants has became an animated staple for many, colouring an abundance of viewers' lives with the zany antics of its very memorable roster of characters. However, fans of the television program were sent into a frenzy over the weekend when a twitter account, that appeared to be an authorized SpongeBob account, randomly admitted that the show would air its final episode on March 1.
No forewarning was given about a potential last season for the series, which inevitably left many in shock at the unforeseen revelation. The tweet, which has since been deleted, reveals that "Unfortunately, our show will be coming to a final end as of March 1st, 2018. It's been a long ride, and we are very grateful for all the fans worldwide that have shown support throughout the years, none of this would have been possible without you."
However, fans of the show rejoice, as the official SpongeBob Twitter account has not posted this tweet themselves. Similarly, Entertainment Weekly recently revealed that Nickelodeon had ordered another 26 episodes, effectively renewing the series into 2019.
While rumours of the show's demise circulate almost every year, this time around, the tweet that sent many into panic mode had an aura of authenticity that effectively legitimized its claims.
