Saturday evening, actor John Mulaney stood in as host of the latest edition of Saturday Night Live, while Jack White served as musical guest. By the end of the broadcast though, a new announcement soon took precedent as the show announced Donald Glover as both host and musical guest for the forthcoming May 5th broadcast of the sketch comedy show in a homecoming of epic proportions.
You’ll recall that as his musical career as Childish Gambino was in its nascent stages, Glover had long established himself as an NBC mainstay, serving as a writer with the network, appearing in episodes of 30 Rock and starring in Community. He also had a solid standup comedy career that was cut way too short way too soon if you’re asking the right people. Nowadays, we’re familiar with him on our small screens Earn Marks on his own creation Atlanta on FX and will soon be acquainted with him as a young Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story film and as Simba in Disney’s rework of The Lion King.
The Golden Globe-winning and Grammy-nominated multi-hyphenate now joins a rather short list of performers who have served as both host and musical guest. Others include Drake, Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lopez, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, Ariana Grande, and Blake Shelton.
