The premiere of Jada Pinkett Smith's Facebook talk show Red Table Talk saw the actress open up about her relationship with longtime husband Will Smith. However, Pinkett Smith used the inaugural episode to air some grievances about the beginning of her romantic affiliation with the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star, bringing forth his ex-wife as the series' first guest.
The actress sat down with Sheree Fletcher to tackle some pressing matters related to her husband's first divorce and the catalyst behind their separation. Pinkett Smith began dating Will while he was still legally bound to Fletcher via marriage, and the two had a child together named Trey, who was only three years-old during this tumultuous time.
"Because I did not understand marriage, I did not understand divorce, I probably should have fell back," the Girls Trip star admits.
Fletcher, alongside the Smiths, were able to put their troubles behind them and establish a tight-knit blended family unit. Fletcher then recalls the impact the actress had on her son as a child. "So Trey comes home and I said, ‘How did you like Miss Jada?’ He said, ‘I really liked her, Mommy," effectively prompting Pinkett Smith to tear-up. Fletcher then reaches her hand out and tells the talk show host "thank you for loving my baby."
Fletcher's appearance on Red Table Talk, and the pair's experience in co-parenting a child was important for Pinkett Smith, as it was her first experience with motherhood. "At that particular time, before [having a blended family] was popular, before it was even an idea, we were trying to create something that we had never experienced. We came from broken homes. We didn’t have a blueprint. We just had an idea. This is what we think we want. This is what we want to try to do for Trey."
