Everything from the 80's is either getting remade, rebooted, or a sequel. Tom Cruise is returning to his role as Maverick three decades later in the Top Gun sequel that is named after his character. Cruise will be joined by Val Kilmer, who played Iceman in the original. Iceman and Maverick were rivals throughout the film, and their antics led to the death of Maverick's co-pilot Goose. Now, it appears that Goose's son will be joining the sequel.
According to Variety, Miles Teller (Divergent, War Dogs) has been cast as Goose's son and Maverick's new protege. It will be interesting to see the relationship between Maverick and Goose's son, since the former blames himself for the death of his co-pilot. He will undoubtedly be hesitant to train his deceased friend's son, but something tells me there will be a redemption story tied in there. The plot for the film will focus on the creation of drones and other new technology that is making human pilot's jobs obsolete. Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, TRON: Legacy) is set to direct the film. Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise will produce the film, and Harold Faltermeyer, the composer who created Top Gun's memorable theme music, is also returning to the production. Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on July 12, 2019.
