The filmmaker is helping expand the DC Cinematic Universe.

Ava DuVernay is one of the most flexible directors working in modern day cinema. She has gained critical acclaim for her directorial work on films like Selma and 13th, the latter of which garnered her an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary Feature. However, DuVernay has also infiltrated the mainstream with her adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, which recently debuted in theatres as an alternative to current reigning champ of the box office Black Panther

The director is looking to achieve MCU-level success by venturing into the DC Cinematic Universe. She has recently been tapped to direct the upcoming New Gods project, which is based on Jack Kirkby's '70s comics that includes characters such as Darkseid, Orion, Mister Miracle, Big Barda and others. The film was briefly hinted at when Steppenwolf, one of Darkseid's commanders, was used in 2017's Justice League

Variety reports that New Gods will effectively usher in a run of cosmic-themed DC productions that will centre on a deeply-rooted conflict between New Genesis and Apokolips.

DuVernay alluded to the news recently on Twitter, giving a shout out to Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins whilst accepting praise for her latest cinematic endeavour.
