The state of Florida is dealing with another tragedy today after a newly installed pedestrian bridge at Florida International University collapsed, leaving multiple vehicles trapped underneath. The bridge came down just before 2 PM today and police tell Fox News that there are several fatalities with no specific number.
Just recently Miami police were told that Fire Rescue have pulled out six people with injuries and the search is still on.
ABC News reports that the 174-foot, 950-ton bridge was installed "in a few hours" using "accelerated bridge construction" methods, which the university said "reduces potential risks to workers, commuters, and pedestrians and minimizes traffic interruptions." The bridge was only installed this past Saturday.
The company that built the bridge, Munilla Construction Management, has responded to the matter saying:
An eyewitness tells ABC News that the screams coming from under the bridge were "terrifying."
"As soon as I looked outside, I saw dust flying everywhere," Witness Tiona Page said. "I knew the bridge had collapsed."
