Swae Lee Says "Hurt To Look" Is A Song "Meant To End Racism"

Swae Lee of Rae Sremmurd sat down with Carl Chery for #OnRepeat Live on Beats 1 Radio. They discussed both lighthearted and heavy handed topics with the focus mostly on Swae Lee's breakthrough as a solo artist. 

On the lighter side of things, Carl Chery helped Swae pick a crossover R&B stage name, starting with Marvin Swaye, and a listing a slew of other puns. This comes as people are generally fascinated by the evolution of Swae Lee's singing voice. The more you know, the less you understand.

On the heavy side, Swae Lee believes his song "Hurt to Look" can be an instrument for social change. Swae Lee laments "I shouldn't have to catch a case 'cause I'm the one that can't stand to feel any more pain," in the opening bridge of the song. He is referencing police stand offs with racial minorities in a way that is imperceivable due to his angelic voice taking all the attention away. Never the less, he sees an easy solution to the stalemate through the miracle of music.

Swae Lee also shared his opinion on who in the game writes and performs the best hooks and to no one's surprise he named Future and Sex (Young Thug). Carl Cheryl tripped up at the utterance of "Sex" as he was genuinely surprised that people in the industry had taken to Thugger's name change. Swae Lee's response was fitting: "I feel his music, (it's) Sex to the ears."
