Yesterday morning, Marshall County High School was just the second American educational institution in two days to endure a fatal shooting perpetrated by a student. In the aftermath of this latest tragedy, the death toll rose to 2, while another 17 people were injured and in need of urgent medical attention.
Bryson Cockwright, a student who witnessed the shooting, spoke with Good Morning America about the event, and recalled the particularly harrowing experience of witnessing this act of violence.
Cockwright is still trying to process this traumatic encounter on what should have been an ordinary and particularly uneventful Tuesday morning. He reveals that he and his friends were sitting in a group together at around 8 a.m. when the gunman opened fire in the building without warning. Speaking with Robin Roberts, Cockwright notes how "I was a little to the side. I was basically in the group. I see this kid walk up. I didn't pay that much attention to (him). I turn back and he draws a gun out from his side and I'm like ... I didn't know what to think at all. And I see this kid draw up his gun and he just points it."
Cockwright further details that "by the time he pulled the trigger, it hit me that this kid ... he's shooting at us, he's shooting at us and I was just sitting there in shock and watching my friends and people that I've known forever ... just dropped. It was unbelievable."
The 18 year-old also reveals how "the ones that lost their lives, they were probably the nicest people I've ever met. They never had anything negative to say."
The 15 year-old at fault for this egregious act of violence, whose name has not yet been released, will be charged with two counts of murder, as well as multiple counts of attempted murder.
