A GoFundMe page was activated to help raise funds for Smoke Dawg's Funeral. The Toronto native, also known by his original name Javante Smart, was killed in his hometown city last Saturday night. The shooting happened outside of a downtown club named Cubed and involved two other victims. Both were rushed to a hospital and one of them, Kosi Modekwe, succumbed to his injuries. A GoFundMe page has also been created for Modekwe, who was an innocent bystander at the time of the shooting.
Smoke Dawg's sister, Tifa, seems to be the one handling the crowdfunding effort. In the campaign's description, she writes:"On June 30th 2018, me and my family lost our dear brother to a senseless act of violence. We’re asking for your help to cover the expenses of his funeral. Any amount is greatly appreciated." She continues, expressing her state of mind with the term "shock," and asks fans to keep their "family in prayer." Tifa ends the statement with "#Spreadlovenothate."
The Halal Gang artist is the latest rapper to lose his life to gun violence, shining a light on the issue in North America. The up and coming rapper's untimely death points to the issue spreading past the U.S. and into Canada. Smoke Dawg was only 21 years-old.
