So much for that All-Rookie Slam Dunk Contest that some fans were calling for.
Just moments after Yahoo Sports' Shams Charania announced that Dallas Mavericks rookie point guard Dennis Smith Jr. had accepted an invitation to compete in the upcoming dunk contest, two more non-rookie participants were revealed.
According to the report, Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon and Indiana Pacers guard Victory Oladipo will also be throwing it down on All Star Saturday night. It will mark Gordon's third consecutive appearance in the dunk contest. Despite a number of jaw-dropping dunks over the years, he has never won the crown, thanks in large part to Zach LaVine. Oladipo also knows what it's like to go up against LaVine in the dunk contest- he was the runner-up to the Bulls guard in the 2015 competition.
So with Dennis Smith Jr, Aaron Gordon and Victor Oladipo reportedly headed to Staples Center for the dunk contest, that leaves one spot remaining.
There are a number of rookies, including Utah Jazz guard Donovan Mitchell, Oklahoma City Thunder guard Terrance Ferguson, and Atlanta Hawks big men John Collins, who are certainly capable of bringing the house down. However, Shams Charania reports that Los Angeles Lakers forward Larry Nance Jr., another incredible dunker, is a "strong candidate to be the fourth participant." Nance's father, Larry Nance, won the dunk contest in 1984.
