Over a year ago, Fat Joe's sneaker store Up NYC was hit with allegations of credit card fraud. The allegations were centered on dubious charges flagged by the store's payment process provider Cayan. While much of the fraudulent activity is up for discussion, one thing remains certain: Fat Joe's co-founder Scott Spina is in a world of trouble.
Spina, then acting as a teenager, is charged with claiming over $750,000 in misappropriated funds. It appears Spina made false-promises that he would provide exclusive sneakers and apparel to a long list of clients, including professional athletes. He never delivered on those promises. Incidentally, Spina also filed a lawsuit against his former partner Fat Joe, claiming the rapper owed him the $500k he put up as overhead before the business landed on its feet. That lawsuit was swiftly kicked out of court, on account of Fat Joe providing a recorded proof.
Spina is facing up to 20 years in prison. the final ruling in his case is scheduled for July 23. On top of the earnings that he embezzled, he may have to pony up over $250k in fines for his disservice to his then-clients. Spina made purchases with the credit card information forwarded to him in confidence.
