In an era where certain young fans are quick to skim through their hip-hop history, it's important to keep the roots of the culture alive. Like any world-changing music genre, hip-hop's emergence was a fascinating tale unto itself, borne through block parties, sampling, DJing, breakdancing, graffiti, and more. When it hit, it didn't take long for people to realize that the game was changing. Now, decades later, hip-hop is alive and well, despite being declared dead more than a few times. Even though it looks a little different these days, there are some artists who have managed to stay connected with their roots, and they're often the ones with the deepest historical knowledge.
In a month's time, SHOWTIME will be premiering a new hip-hop documentary called Word Is Bond, which is set to explore the importance of rhyming within hip-hop, as well as examining the genre in a deeper historical context. Today, you can catch the official trailer (see below), which features words from Pusha T, Nas, Rakim, Styles P, and Rhymefest, with additional commentary set to come from artists like J. Cole, Rapsody, Tech N9ne, Anderson .Paak, Vince Staples.
If you fancy yourself a historian, or simply enjoy watching masters of their craft discuss art and culture, you can catch Word Is Bond on SHOWTIME when it premieres on February 16th, 10PM Eastern Time. Sound off below - are ya'll here for this documentary?
